Schwinget Weissenstein

The exact orgins of the first Weissenstein-Schwinget are unfortunately not clearly documented. However, it is certain that in 1931, for the first time under the leadership of the association, a larger wrestling event took place. It served as a qualifying competition for the Eidgenössisches Schwing- und Älplerfest (Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival) in Zurich. Otto Mollet, then a young constable from Solothurn, secured a victory in the competition. Afterward, wrestling activities quieted down until 1947 when a group of young wrestling enthusiasts took the initiative to revive the wrestling festival. Since then, the event has been held annually (with only four exceptions) and has envolved into a highly popular festival on the Solothurn home mountain. Simultaneously with wrestling, a competition for stone throwers was introduced. Every year, athlets from all over Switzerland compete with the 66kg heavy Weissenstein stone.

T
Triangulation point

A triangulation point is an observation point used in national surveying. It, along with its coordinates and marking, provides stability in the terrain and is an essential basis for cartography. In 1795, Colonel Johann Baptist von Altermatt from Solothurn used the Röti as a triangulation point for his Solothurn map. The Federal Office of Topography has maintained this point. In 1912, a concrete pillar and a metallic pyramid were erected at the triangulation point, and in 1987 and 2022, the installed benchmark was replaced with a new one.

Three brightest ones

Since 1909 three lights are lit on our house. The lights were installed when the Kurhaus was supplied with electricity in 1909. 2019 the lamps were replaced with LED lights.

Timetable

The current travel times of the Weissenstein cable car and the SBB can be found on their websites.

U
Uhuru

«Uhuru»- means “freedom” in Swahili. The annual world music festival on Weissenstein was founded in 1994. Since then, people from various parts of the world have visited and contributed to the event. The music festival takes place each year at the end of July, beginning of August, and lasts for about a week.

V

W
Wallpapers in the rooms and restaurant

The wallpaper in the present-day Hotel Weissenstein are all faithful graphic reconstructions of the original wallpapers in the former Kurhaus. Today, you can find these wallapers in the Mint Blanc Hall and in our historical double rooms.

Our house eagle, Wendelin, is a lively, curious gourmet. He has noted his favorite dishes from the à la carte restaurant on the children’s menu for our little guests. In our self-service restaurant, Wendelin’s favorite ice creams and other snacks for “Picking” are available for the little ones. Wendelin’s eyrie is the center of our playground below the self-service restaurant.
